The following men were elected as club officers for 2008.

President: Ellis Alford

Vice-President: James McPherson

Treasurer: Brian Masters

Sec.\Webmaster: Mark Townsend

ELECTRIC SERVICE  Ellis has been looking into the possibility and costs of acquiring electric service to the field. Initial cost would be about $800.00 to $1,000.00. This would provide about 60 amp service if we run #4 wire. The minimum monthly electric bill would be about $10.00/month.  This information was presented at the October meeting. We discussed it at this meeting and decided to hold it over until January before voting.

2008 FUN FLY DATES    The following dates were set for our flying events for next year.

METAL STORAGE BUILDING

After discussion the club voted to purchase one of the old paper collection units from Ark-La Recycling for $500.00.

The old paper recycling collection units are about 7 feet wide and 14 feet long.  The bottom is angled in on the sides so the flat floor area is about 5-1/2 feet wide.  They are solid metal with doors on one end that open completely.  There are openings on the sides that would have to be welded closed and caulked.  Cost is $500.  They can be seen at the corner of New Natchitoches and Well Road.

FALL FUN FLY WITH BIG BIRDS - September 22

Work Day to mow, bush-hog, repair, clean, and paint on Saturday, September 15.Responsibilities are as follows:  These men may ask other members to assist them. Concessions:  Scott

Pilot Sign-in: Scott - Assisted by Geoff and Terry

Impound:  Ellis – Assisted by Tim, Armond, and Brian

Raffle and Pilot Prizes:  Chuck

Advertising: Randy – Radio & TV; Scott – Print School Flyers; Ellis and Bill - Deliver School Flyers

Donations: Randy – Out of town;  _Ellis_ - Hobby Town

Pilot Meeting:  Stan

PA System:  Terry

Award Plaques: Randy

A few things that we could do to improve safety and congestion as our events grow were suggested after the Bud Cady Fun Fly this spring.  Since only about half of the pilots are at the pilots meeting we will print sheets with what was covered and hand them to the pilots as they check in.  The radio impound needs to be separate from pilot sign-in and raffle ticket sales to reduce congestion and insure adequate frequency control.  We will use the frequency board with pins and update it to include pins for the new spread spectrum radios.  Have safety officers and every member keep an eye out for any safety concerns and address them as they occur.

SOIL SAMPLES  Took soil samples from each end of the runway and the center of the runway and had them tested.  North and center need Calcitic Lime and low nitrogen fertilizer.  South ends needs no lime and high nitrogen fertilizer.  Lime application needs to be after grass is dormant.

METAL STORAGE BUILDING  The old paper recycling collection units are about 7 feet wide and 14 feet long.

ELECTRIC GENERATOR   Ellis will look into the possibility and costs of acquiring a small generator and running electric power to the pit area.  We could charge batteries and run fans during hot weather.

MASA Fall Fun Fly - October 6  (El Dorado)

Pine Bluff Fall Fun Fly – September 29
July 2007
Our July meeting was held Sunday, July 29th at the field.  There were no important topics of discussion.  The mowing schedule to the left was set.  Also, Randy asked anyone having spare time to consider mowing some of the areas not mowed by the weekly guys.  The rain this year has been great for our runway but has made it hard to keep up mowing the other areas.  We will discuss fun fly stuff at our August meeting.  Congratulations to Bryce and Brandon our two newest Junior pilots to solo.  Bryce has been at it for a while and Brandon soloed a few weeks ago.  He is now our youngest pilot.  Tim is now taking fuel donations.
June 2007

ROTC SUMMER LEADERSHIP SCHOOL Thanks to James M., Mark, Shane, and Logan for flying and bringing planes and helis for display. Scott, Bob, and Randy also brought planes for display. The cadets very much enjoyed the flying and getting to see all the models. Several were interested in learning to fly.

STARTER STAND AND TABLE  Thank you to Scott for building 2 starting stands and a table for under the pit cover. They are a much needed addition to our field.

BOB MIMS MOVING  Bob Mims will be moving to Mississippi in July. The club and the community will miss him very much. We appreciate all the work he has done for the club the last few years and wish him the best at his new school. We will have a going away dinner tomorrow (Monday, June 25) at Logan’s Restaurant at 6:00. Families are welcome.

May 2007

ROTC SUMMER LEADERSHIP SCHOOL   Again, this year the school will be at LA Tech. The school commandant has asked NEARC to conduct the course and put on demos for the cadets. We need to have a lot of static displays, but the flying will be limited to electrics and helicopters. The school dates are June 16-23. Day and time for our presentation will be Wednesday the 20 th at 5:30 in the afternoon. Bob will talk briefly about model aviation and pass out some take-home materials to the cadets. Mark, James, and Shane will perform flight demonstrations. There will be time at the end for the cadets to come down on the track, look at the planes, and talk to us about model aviation. We will need a lot our guys to bring planes for static display. Last year this was a very enjoyable event for everyone that took part. The cadets and their leaders really enjoyed our efforts and were very appreciative. Hopefully, this year we can do even better.

TRAINING   We had our flight-training day on May 19. We started with ground school on the basics, had some simulator time, and then provide actual training flights. We had 2 students that had never flown before. They each got at least 3 good training flights. A couple of our newer members also got some stick time. Thanks to Scott, Terry, and Bill for the training flights and to Ellis and Tim for the laptops with flight simulators. James M., Carl, and Jeff H. also helped out during the day.

STARTER STAND AND TABLE   Thank you to Scott for building a starting stand (2 nd one is coming soon) and a table for under the pit cover. They are a much needed addition to our field.

BOB MIMS MOVING   Bob Mims will be moving to Mississippi in July. The club and the community will miss him very much. We appreciate all the work he has done for the club the last few years and wish him the best at his new school. We would like to have a going away dinner sometime later this month. Randy will get with Bob and set a time.

APRIL 2007

TRAINING We are planning a flight-training day on May 19. We will start with ground school on the basics, have some simulator time, and then provide actual training flights. We will need several laptop computers to provide simulation. We will limit class size to 12 on this first time. If you can provide a laptop with a flight simulator or help train on your plane, let me know so we can begin planning. Laptops – Randy, Tim, Ellis,

ROTC SUMMER LEADERSHIP SCHOOL Again, this year the school will be at LA Tech. The school commandant has asked NEARC to conduct the course and put on demos for the cadets. We will have to conduct a class, perhaps a half-hour, on R/C modeling and then have some of our members fly a few planes. We need to have a lot of static displays, but the flying will be limited to electrics and helicopters. The school dates are June 16-23. Day and time for our presentation will be Wednesday the 20 th at 4:00 in the afternoon. Bob can prepare a power point presentation and teach the class. We will need a lot of planes for static display and some of our real good fliers to fly. Last year this was a very enjoyable event for everyone that took part. The cadets and their leaders really enjoyed our efforts and were very appreciative. Hopefully, this year we can do even better.

BUD CADY FUN FLY APRIL 28

Our event was a great success. Everyone had a great time, there was a lot of good flying and plenty of spectators to watch. I would like to give a big thanks to the ladies that did the concessions. Robin, Teresa, Linda, and Esther not only cooked and worked the concessions during the event, but cooked the desserts that were sold. At the meeting Sunday several guys commented on how good the food was and how much they appreciated the ladies for helping. Thanks also to Scott for gathering everything for the concessions and getting it to the field; to Terry for bringing the sound equipment; to Shane for running the contests for us; to Mark for some awesome demos, to HobbyTown for some great pilot prizes and having a table at the fun fly.

Contest Winners Were: Terry Cady – Timed Loops and Billy Langford – Climb & Glide

OK, here’s some numbers: We had a total of 31 pilots sign in. There were 22 from our club (that’s a great turn-out from our guys), 4 from BBFC in Monroe, 2 from MASA in El Dorado, 1 from Winnsboro, 1 from Tallulah, and 1 from Monroe who is not in a club.

A few things that we could do to improve safety and congestion as our events grow were suggested at the meeting. Since only about half of the pilots are at the pilots meeting we will print sheets with what was covered and hand them to the pilots as they check in. The radio impound needs to be separate from pilot sign-in and raffle ticket sales to reduce congestion and insure adequate frequency control. Having an announcer would help Randy considerably. Have safety officers remind anyone not following the rules of the rules.

CLUB DUES

After discussion, the proposed changes to the dues structure was passed unanimously with no changes from the proposal sent to the membership several weeks ago. The changes include:

  • Eliminate the $50.00 initial fee.
  • Annual dues are $120.00 less a $30.00 discount if paid by January 31.
  • New members would pay the annual rate no matter when in the year they join the club, but their second year dues would be pro-rated by the quarter of the year in which they joined. This is the same system that AMA uses.
  • Junior members would continue to be free.

Sections III and IV of the club’s bylaws deal with club dues. See by-laws page to view see details of this change.

FALL FUN FLY

Workday to prepare the field was held on September 23. Thanks to James Drewett, Terry Cady, Scott Brown, Geoff Dison, Kyle Walker, and Ellis Alford for their help. Also, thanks to Scott and James McPherson for working at the field last Friday to put the finishing touches on before the Fun Fly.

The Fun Fly was a great success! The weather was good – a little hot, but at least dry. We had a total of 26 pilots sign in. There were 13 from our club and others from Monroe, El Dorado, Newellton, and Tallulah. There were pilots from Jonesboro there too, but they didn’t fly. Scott bought the food for the concessions and Scott’s wife and my wife and daughter helped cook and serve. They really helped out during the busy lunch time rush. Bob Mims helped me at the impound most of the day and Terry and Geoff helped with concessions. Terry set up the speakers so we could make announcements. Scott and I really appreciated Terry and Ellis helping us load up our trucks and trailer that evening. It had been a really long day, but a good, fun day. Thanks to all who helped get ready and flew and worked during the Fun Fly. I have heard from several guests and they really enjoyed their day with us.

EXTEND PIT COVER

We discussed adding to the existing pit cover, but decided to wait and see if we will be able to tie into the water system before committing to spending any money. We will discuss it again next month.

NEARC CLUB SHIRTS

Scott has the shirt order in and also has some extras if you didn’t order one.

2007 OFFICER NOMINATIONS IN THE OCTOBER MEETING

We will nominate club officers for next year at the October Meeting. Consider serving the club as an officer next year and talk to other members you consider good officer candidates.

CLUB DUES

Ellis and I are looking at revising our dues and fee structure to lower the cost of joining and being a member. We will look at several other clubs and hope to have recommendations at the October Meeting. If you have suggestions, let Ellis or myself know.

NOTE: During the hot dry weather we need to be careful not to mow the runway too short. Use the club mower or your mower set at least 2-1/2 to 3” high. If the runway doesn’t need mowing on your week, try to mow some of the other parts of the field.

FALL FUN FLY

Sanctioning papers have been sent in and approved for September 30.

CHRISTMAS DINNER

We will again have a room reserved at Catfish Cabin; Thursday, December 7, 6:30 pm.

WATER SYSTEM INSTALLATION

Water company is going to abandon the existing line and run a new line outside the landfill area to the shooting range. We will have no access to water along our property line, but may be able to tie in at the shooting range. For now, a sprinkler system is on hold until we see exactly where the water line is run and how far we would have to go to access it.

ROTC SUMMER LEADERSHIP SCHOOL

Our demo was on Wednesday, June 21 at 5:30. We had 6 guys there. Bob, James, Mark, Ellis, Sha, and Randy. We had plenty of planes for static display and Mark and James did a great job of doing flight demos in a tight flying area. Bob gave a good talk about modeling, then Mark and James took turns flying, then the students had about 10-15 minutes to look at the planes and talk to us about modeling. It was a very good presentation by our club.

BUD CADY FUN FLY APRIL 29

Thanks to Scott, Terry, James Drewett, Jeffery Haynes, and Geoff Dison for helping mow and get the field in shape last Saturday. Scott and Terry for mowing again Friday. James McPherson for smoothing the driveway and the parking lot.

The event was totally rained out and because of pending work at the field and conflicts with other club’s fun flys it will not be rescheduled.

WATER SYSTEM INSTALLATION

The club voted to have a water meter installed and run PVC pipe to the runway/infield area for watering. This will be a basic manual system for now, but can be easily expanded to an automated in-ground sprinkler system when funds allow. Cost estimates are given below. If you have anything (hoses, sprinklers, pipe, ect.) that you are not using that may help us, let Randy know.

SAFETY

See the NEARC Safety Rules and Guidelines sheet at the end of this report. It is a good reminder for all of us and we can hand it out to new members so they can more quickly learn our safety procedures. If you have a suggestion for an addition or change to these guidelines, please let Randy know.

RUNWAY AND SPRINKLER SYSTEM

Scott and Randy have checked several possible configurations and the best estimates are:

1. Fully automatic system for the entire runway and taxiway area would about $2,300 to $2,500 depending on

final design and available water pressure

2. System with about 6 hoses and sprinklers that run automatically would be about $ 1600

WORKDAY – MARCH 11

JANUARY 2006

MEMORIAL PLAQUES We have the plaques, but need to wait until all field work is done to build a monument to display them unless we place it outside the spectator fence.

ROTC SUMMER LEADERSHIP SCHOOL This year the school will be at LA Tech. The school commandant has offered NEARC the opportunity to conduct the course and put on demos for the cadets. We will have to conduct a class, perhaps a half-hour, on R/C modeling and then have some of our members fly a few planes. We need to have a lot of static displays, but the flying will probably be limited to electrics and helicopters. The school dates are June 17-24 and the class will probably be on Tuesday (20 th) or Thursday (22 nd) afternoon. Bob can prepare a power point presentation and teach the class. We will need a lot of planes for static display and some of our real good fliers to fly. Bob can arrange for indoor or outdoor flying depending on the weather. If you have any video that Bob could use for his presentation, let him know.

BUDGET AND PRIORITY LIST FOR FIELD IMPROVEMENTS:After annual and maintenance expenses are covered the runway and taxiway will be our main and possibly only priority. We will have to wait and see whether we will have access to water and what the weather does this spring before definite plans can be made.

Randy met David Cobb of the Ouachita Parish Police Jury at the field. He said Jay Mitchell had forwarded our letter to him and he wanted Randy to show him what we had in mind. Randy showed him where we would place a fence and Mr. Cobb said that was no problem as long as we stayed inside the power line poles and left room for their equipment to move beside the road. Mr. Cobb told Randy that the water line would be run along Enterprise Road to the power line right-of-way to the shooting range then into the shooting range. This means we would have to connect along Enterprise Road and not along the dirt road that our driveway is on. Mr. Cobb said we could trench up to one foot deep to bury our water line and we could connect anywhere along Enterprise Road. No one at the Police Jury, Water Company, or Sheriff’s Dept. can tell us when the water line will be run, but they expect it to be sometime this year.

We will be planning how we would want a sprinkler system designed and what the total cost would be while we wait on water to be available. When water is available the club will be presented with cost estimates and designs and asked to vote on it. In the mean time we will mark the low spots in the runway and taxiway areas, add topsoil and grass seed this spring and hope we get more rain than last year.
